Finding Alternatives To Health Insurance

By Madeline Finch

A large number of people look for alternatives to health insurance as they do not have this type of cover. High monthly premiums are touted as the major factor that contribute this. There are other reasons such as loss of a job, instances where your employer does not offer a health plan, low-income and young adults who have turned 18.

Life is full of uncertainties. Accidents or diseases can strike at any time without prior notice. They can have a negative impact on your finances especially if you are not covered. This is the reason why in some countries, it is compulsory to have indemnity cover for automobiles, boats, homes, business premises and so forth.

How the health plan works is very simple. Once you have signed the contract, the responsibility of footing medical bills whenever you fall sick or have an accident falls into the jurisdiction of the insurer. Keep in mind that the type of cover you opt for dictates your claim. You are mandated to pay monthly premiums as stated in the policy. Failure to this leads to a breach of contract.

Your employer, be it a corporate organization or a government agency is mandated with the responsibility of ensuring you have cover. This is changing. In recent years, there has emerged a trend - entrepreneurs are taking advantage of this business opportunity. In a bid to minimize expenses, they are offering medical cover.

There are literally thousands of health insurance plans available on offer online or through banks and brokers. It's easy to get confused. There are factors to be considered when choosing the plan that best suits your needs and does not make you dig deep into your pocket.

There are a number of factors to be considered when selecting the best cover. The firs one is the type of cover. There are basically two types, comprehensive and basic. The later one is cheap and deals with cases of hospitalization and surgery whereas the second one covers preventive care, prescription drugs and medical check ups.

Another factor considered when selecting a convenient plan is the level of deductibles. This is the amount of the bill which you are supposed to pay whereas the insurer pays off the rest. The higher the deductibles, the less premium you pay.

Other considerations are length of coverage and doctor access. Due to the economic turmoils, there has been more demand for short-term cover as it is cheap. Most insurance plans provide doctor networks in a bid to reduce costs. It might be a good idea to check if your preferred hospital or family physician is included.

There are three ways you can use to minimize your hospital bills if you're not covered. First, attending free clinics. Secondly, buying prescription drugs from local chemists and thirdly, negotiating your bill. Family members and friends may also contribute funds to help you out.

There are other alternatives to health insurance. Detailed information on this can be found online. You can alternatively visit your local library for reading material.
