Amazing Therapeutic Breakthrough Of Clodronate Liposome

By Brandie Montgomery

There have been major improvements regarding therapeutic treatments for various human medical diseases. This includes gene therapy, several anti cancer treatments and now clodronate liposome. Indeed, the latter have showed promising results that might help on the treatment of various autoimmune diseases, prevention of transplantation rejection and most importantly, cancer.

Macrophage is considered to be one of the important components of the immune system. It has two important functions and that includes the regulation of non phagocytic cell and it basically activates the natural immune response. In addition to that, macrophages has a significant role during immunity and immune responses. Macrophages are also responsible on the homoeostasis of the body through ingestion and digestion of microorganism.

It activates the process of T and B lymphocytes, meaning they are the ones that can activate the immune system to work. Such phenomenon though is a good thing as it defends human from getting sick such as flu or any another viral diseases. But, this could also be a bad thing especially to those that have autoimmune diseases or to people that just had a transplant operation.

Autoimmune diseases for example are disease that are caused through the immune system. Such diseases are caused by the self attack of the immune system towards certain cells on the body. Normally, the immune system is triggered by the attack of macrophages to bacteria or other foreign cell inside the body.

There are several autoimmune diseases to mention a few, this includes systemic lupus erythematosus, pernicious anemia, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis . Transplant patients on the other hand will always face the risk of their transplanted organs on being rejected. Sometimes the body identifies the newly transplanted organ's cells to be foreign, causing an extreme attack with the immune system resulting to acute or chronic rejection.

Therefore liposomes acts as a vehicle to effectively carry clodronate inside the body and towards the cells without destroying its composition. After injecting the solution, the macrophage will then automatically identifies the substance to be foreign hence engulfing it. As soon as the macrophage ingest and digest the liposome, the main component of the drug will be released intracellularly.

After injection of the liposome containing the active component, macrophages will identify such component as foreign hence activating phagocytosis. As soon as the liposome is engulfed by the phagocyte, it will release the active component, clodronate inside then inducing apoptosis. Apoptosis is a process that cause cell death.

However this time, the cell being attacked is the macrophage. To correlate it with the autoimmune diseases, damage to the macrophage effectively suppresses the immune system making it a promising therapeutic treatment to patients with autoimmune disease and to prevent rejection to people who had just undergone transplantation. Suppression of the immune system is significant towards treatment or slowing down disease progression in autoimmune diseases.

Several research conclusions have made clodronate liposome a promising therapeutic agent for humans affected with cancer and autoimmune diseases. Such component was said to have a significant role in cardiovascular diseases as well and that includes myocardial infarction.
