The Right Way to go on a Low Carb Diet

By James Steele

There are all sorts of people out there who advocate the elimination of carbohydrates from our diets. Of all the many diets, two of them, South Beach and Atkins, tell you that losing weight and consuming carbohydrates do not go together. This might be true, but, probably not. You need to eliminate the bad carbohydrates, but keep eating the good carbohydrates. Moderation is the key when trying to lose weight, especially when it comes to good carbs. A nutritionist can put a diet plan together for you, and even use the help of your doctor. For the time being, these few tips on dieting will at least get you on the right course.

Try using cauliflower instead of rice. This is a way to eat more vegetables and fewer calories. You can also cook it a lot faster than rice. In other words, substituting grated cauliflower for rice will save you time and load you up with fewer carbs. The only thing you'll be giving up when you use cauliflower rather than rice is some unwanted carbs. One good thing about rice is that it's cheap and you can buy it in bulk; cauliflower will, it must be noted, cost you more. However, if you're seeking ways to make more low carb dishes, this is one nutritious option.

Eggs are a fantastic source of vitamins, minerals and nutrients for people who are trying to avoid carbs - especially during breakfast time. When you think of breakfast, fatty foods are normally what come to mind. Think about it: isn't bacon one of the first things you think of when you think of having breakfast? Just having eggs and a glass of juice can be a tasty breakfast that is totally filling and satisfying. Make sure, though, that you don't add a bunch of things like cheese or other additives that are high in carbohydrates or you will undo all of the work you've put in to keeping your carb count low.

Watch out for tortillas! Tortillas are the basis for many tasty and convenient foods, and if you're a burrito fan you probably eat them frequently. Unfortunately, tortillas are rich in the bad kinds of carbohydrates (even the ones made from corn) and typically have other ingredients like salt contribute to health problems. You can enjoy the same flavors of a taco or burrito by eating these foods on their own rather than wrapped in a tortilla. This is sort of like ordering a sandwich without the bread, only these foods are so spicy and flavorful that it's likely you won't even miss the tortilla. The only food that won't work as well for this tactic is the quesadilla but, depending on the cheese you choose, it might be a food you should skip altogether.

If you go on a low carb diet, you just have to change your perspective a little. You should get rid of the notion that eating any carbs at all is bad for you. You should be conscious of what kinds of carbohydrates you eat; get them from natural, whole grain and vegetable sources and limit your portions. If you need some encouragement or advice, you should see your doctor to get additional help. One or two consultations with a professional can help you get a clearer idea of what it takes to maintain a low carb diet.
